Center
of European Cultural Studies:
The
"Western European Model"
External lecturer Lars Hovbakke Sørensen
Friday 13-16, building 451, room 317
During the period 1945-1990 the Western European societies had a lot of
common traits, which at the same time distinguished them from most of the
rest of the World. Despite all the differences between the Western
European states, the democratic multi party systems and the social liberal
welfare state combined with a high degree of industrialization and of
technological development made the Western European societies different
from both the Eastern and the Central part of Europe and from most other
states outside the European continent. Furthermore the existence of a
system of a large number of rather small states combined with an ongoing
integration process is a unique feature of Western Europe.
The purpose of this seminar is to examine the development of the
"Western European Model" since 1945. Special attention will be
paid to an analysis of similarities and differences among the European
welfare state systems as well as between the political systems and the
party systems.
A central question in relation to these topics will be, whether it is
appropriate to talk about the existence of various "regional
models" or "sub-models" within the general "Western
European Model". Is it e.g. relevant to talk about a
"Scandinavian Model", a"Nordic Model" or
"Continental European Model"? And what about Great Britain? Does
a separate "British Model" exist, or might we talk about an
"Anglo-Scandinavian Model?
Finally also the role of the welfare state in relation to the European
integration proces within OEEC/OECD, EC/EU etc. will be analysed. The
ideas of the welfare state among EC's "founding fathers" as well
as the development of EC/EU's welfare state policies will thus be
examined.
Exam papers can be written about many different issues within the general
theme of the political, social and economic history of Western Europe
since 1945.
European
Political Institutions: The European Union
External lecturer Kristine Midtgaard
Monday 13-16, building 451, room 325
The complexity of the European Union (EU) makes it one of the most
fascinating international political institutions to study. The course will
seek to equip students to interpret key aspects in relation to the EU:
What is 'European integration', why is the EU there, and how did it get
from Rome to Nice, and even beyond? How can the EU be conceptualized? Why
is the EU engaged in certain political fields? What is the nature of the
relationship between the supranational institutions, the member states,
the 370 million citizens in the EU, and the rest of the world? Thus the
purpose of the course is to provide students with a combination of
theoretical tools and de facto insights into understanding the most unique
political institutional phenomenon in contemporary Europe.
Kristine Midtgaard has a degree in History and European Studies. She has
taught courses on European integration at the Dept. of History. She is
finishing her dissertation on Denmark’s relation to the UN 1949-1965.

centralt her. Formålet med udbuddet er at etablere en forståelse for
dynamikken bag den europæiske integrationsproces efter 1973 og at få et
kendskab til de vigtigste teoretiske og empiriske problemstillinger
indenfor dette felt.
Jean Monnet Lectures, Spring 2001
This spring semester the Jean Monnet Center will once again arrange a series of Jean Monnet Lectures. The series will deal with questions of European integration in general and with Denmark's participation in the process in particular.
The lectures, which all will be taught in English, are primarily directed to students from the Department of Political Science, the Department of History and the Center for European Cultural Studies as well as to foreign students. However, students from other departments are most welcome. As a proof of active participation students may obtain a diploma documenting a European dimension in his/her studies. To obtain this diploma a participation rate of 80% (participation in at least 10 out of the 12 lectures) is required. Last year more than 100 students from different departments obtained this diploma.
It is possible to register for the Jean Monnet Lectures by contacting the Jean Monnet Center (hismr@hum.au.dk), or at the first lecture of the series. The series of Jean Monnet Lectures is slated for 15-17 on Mondays, in Building 324, auditorium 025. At the three founding departments, several courses are available in European integration this forthcoming semester. See below for the programmes of Jean Monnet Lectures and the departemental courses.
